It was recently announced that Amazon Studios ordered a series adaptation of PlayStation’s hit ancient mythology-themed action video game God of War.
The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, “after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
Vernon Sandershead of global television at Amazon Studios has come out and praised what the series is doing and says that the studio is always looking for things that have an “emotional core” and a “real narrative story” which is what makes God of War ” special.”
He went on to share some new details on the story and praised it saying: “At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape. So what Rafe [Judkins] and Mark [Fergus] and Hawk [Ostby] have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it’s going to be huge.”
The series is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions. Mark Fergus other Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) are writing the series with Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) serving as showrunner.
That all sounds very exciting, and I hope that the creative team will actually be able to pull this off and deliver a badass and epic God of War series! There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be that!
